THE NEW PLAYGROUND FOR OUR CHILDREN, ONLINE OR VIRTUAL REALITY?
In the recent past, most parents concerns were whether their young teenage child is socially acceptable. Parents knew more or less that the majority of their children’s social interaction was engaging in group physical activities at specific well known locations – schools, skate parks, corner shops, playgrounds, and the local neighborhood This is familiar and was the same “territory” which the parents have experienced in their childhood\teenage days and through their experience, and that “past on” (from their parents), they have developed their shielding skills to help their kids through their own experiences, as their parents have done for them and their grand parents and so forth…
..with the increasing use and development of “Social Media” something “unnatural” has intervened and changed the terms of reference and engagement rules for everyone, most parents and grand parents are lost in the new social cyber world of a online playground of social networks, chats applications, sms and texting, emails, chat rooms, blogs etc..
Accordingly parents are no longer able to physically hear or see their children friends, interactions and behaviors and as such be able to provide advice and guidance.
So what happens really in a world where parents are removed from social interactions and buffered from their children? They can no longer provide instance advice and guidance as to appropriate and acceptable behavior no longer able to talk to the dangers that await them in the “real” world. What happens to the old known warnings where sentences such as “stranger danger” were so clearly understood everyone.
